2002 Qualifying Differentials: Malaysia
By Marcel Borsboom, Netherlands
Atlas F1 Magazine Writer
For the fifth year running, Atlas F1 is going to keep an eye on the battle between teammates throughout the season with a simple measurement: we compare the qualifying times of each driver against his teammate's result. After every Grand Prix, we will show how teammates have fared up against each other, and where they are overall since the beginning of the season. At the end of the season, the World Champion of Qualifying Differentials will be elected - the driver who beat his teammate by the most seconds. Only those who participate in at least 15 of the 17 rounds are eligible for the coveted crown; and for those who made the efforts and participated in all 17 races, the best and worst result will be scrapped.
With two qualifying sessions completed for 2002, the differentials are once again on a roll! Let's see which drivers deserve bragging rights.
Malaysia Notables
- Arrows. The Arrows team saw their best qualifying result since the 2000 Italian Grand Prix.
- Panis. despite major problems for BAR's Olivier Panis in the free practice sessions and in qualifying itself, the Frenchman still managed to qualify close to teammate Jacques Villeneuve, some 0.351s behind.
- Setting the Record Straight: Kimi Raikkonen equaled his best qualifying position ever, while Takuma Sato too had his best ever qualifiying (15th).
- The Excuses: Felipe Massa had to use the spare car in qualifying, which might explain, at least to some extent, the gap between himself and Sauber teammate Nick Heidfeld (0.858s).
- Changes since Australia: Michael Schumacher is now ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello; Nick Heidfeld is ahead of Felipe Massa; Jacques Villeneuve is ahead of teammate Olivier Panis; Jenson Button ahead of Jarno Trulli; and Pedro de la Rosa ahead of Eddie Irvine.
