The decision of the FIA to only take Michael Schumacher's points away as a punishment for his actions during the last Grand Prix of the season has resulted in heavy criticism.

Especially the German newspapers were saying the punishment was way too low. German's leading tabloid called the decision 'crazy'. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung stated: "It was illogical behaviour on the part of the FIA. They made a stiff judgement but issued a ridiculous penalty. Schumacher could not care less about taking a few hours of traffic safety courses and losing his second place this year. Why did the FIA not suspend Schumacher next year? Why did they disqualify Villeneuve in Suzuka after he overlooked a yellow caution flag while Schumacher's deed in a championship race in Jerez will have no effect on the next race?"

The decision also received criticism from British papers. Like the Daily Telegraph: "It is as much a blatant dereliction of duty as that of the race stewards at Jerez who failed to react after the incident. Presumably the book he will lecture from will be the Highwayman's Code."

Or the Daily Mail: "What began as the trial of Michael Schumacher for being a Formula One ram-raider has ended with his motor racing judges in the dock. The charge they face today from hostile world public opinion is one of whitewash."

He also gets support however. Some fans think this is a real harsh decision.
