Summary

Jacques Villeneuve won the Grand Prix of Spain on the Barcelona circuit. He took the lead right at the start and insured a gap, which he could sustain throughout the race. Olivier Panis was getting very close towards the end but there were just too few laps left for the Frenchman to really challenge Villeneuve.

Many teams running Goodyear tyres were suffering from severe tyre wear.

Notes

• BMW will team-up with the Williams team. It is also rumoured that Toyota will have a go at Formula One in 2000.
• Berger stalls his engine just before the parade lap. He has to start from the back, but because Ralf Schumacher also stalls his engine during the start the start is cancelled. Berger gets back to his grid position while Schumacher needs to start from the back.
• Morbidelli get a jump start 10 seconds penalty.
• Katayama retires with technical problems on lap 11.
• Hill blows up another Yamaha engine on lap 18.
• Nakano goes out with transmission problems in the pits on lap 34. He had already lost his 6th gear.
• Salo retires with a blown left hand rear tyre. (lap 35)
• Barrichello parks his Stewart beside the track because of technical problems on lap 37.
• R. Schumacher blows up his Peugeot engine on lap 50.
• Diniz blows up his engine on lap 53.
• Irvine gets a 10 seconds penalty for blocking Panis.

• Villeneuve: "It was a very pleasing day for me and for the whole team after what happened in Monaco. After that stupidity it is good to win again. We have thrown away too many races this year and now we have to make the most of things. The car felt very strong and very fast throughout the race. It was a good all-round team performance."

• Panis on Irvine: "I just could not get past him. He must have some problem with his eyesight. Everyone could see the blue flags were being waved. But it is impossible to talk to Eddie about anything, isn't it?"

• Hill: "I thought we must get a finish sooner or later. The car was running like a train. It just didn't last."

• Salo: "I had big big problems. I had to back off, the car was impossible to drive. Goodyear would be fine if the car was balanced right."
