• Verstappen has his engine replaced in between the morning and the afternoon session.
• Salo is having some electrical problems which causes him to come out very late in qualifying.
• Tyrrell is not using the little extra wings because of the long straights.

• Villeneuve: "The car was just a little better and I was able to go a little quicker than Heinz-Harald but it was close. I feel the car is very good, the team is strong and we are in very good shape and feeling confident."

• M. Schumacher: "Qualifying went more or less the way I had expected. We managed to improve the car compared to its performance in last week's test. Unfortunately it was not enough. The car is quite well balanced and handles well. It does not have sufficient aerodynamic efficiency, which is why we are not very quick. Tomorrow I will try and pick up as many points as possible."

• Coulthard: "We're in good shape to finish on the podium. But tyre wear will be vital."
