Durand Joins Jordan as Director of Development

Friday March 15th, 2002

Former Prost technical director Henri Durand has joined the Jordan Formula One team as head of development and design, Jordan said on Friday.

There was no mention of Eghbal Hamidy, the team's technical director who is officially on holiday, in the statement.

Paddock sources do not expect Hamidy to return to the team although Jordan said Durand would be "reporting to the technical director" in his new role.

Since the current incumbent as Jordan's technical chief Hamidy is understood to be on 'gardening leave' pending a move to another team, it seems almost certain that the former Ligier, Ferrari, McLaren and Prost man will step up and take charge at a later date this year.

Durand, 41, has packed much experience into his career already and has served nearly 20 years in Formula One. He was with McLaren for a decade from 1990 to 2000 when he was in charge of their aerodynamics team.

"I am delighted Henri is joining us as he brings great expertise and vast experience gained from working with some of our key rivals," said the Jordan team's chief executive Eddie Jordan.

"It's clear that we have to work harder than ever to achieve success in Formula One and, with the goal of returning the team to a race winning position, I think it is very exciting to have someone of Henri's calibre come on board at this time."

Durand said: "I am excited to join Jordan and to have the chance to work with a team which has shown such potential in recent years. I know there is a very strong group of people at Jordan and that they are determined to achieve success, so I am looking forward to being part of that team and to help them achieve their goals."
