Prost Team Facing Possible Penalty

Saturday May 20th, 2000

Nick Heidfeld was called to face the stewards at the European Grand Prix on Saturday after his Prost car was allegedly found to be two kilos underweight during qualifying for Sunday's race.

The German, who was 23 on Friday, was unavailable for comment but the actions of the stewards meant that the qualifying times remained unofficial more than one hour after the sesssion had ended.

Briton David Coulthard, driving a McLaren, had claimed pole position ahead of championship leading German Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari.

Heidfeld, seeking a good performance to brighten up a poor start to his Formula One career with Alain Prost's team, had qualified 13th before the allegations against him and the team surfaced.

Prost, four times world champion as a driver, has endured a difficult three years as a team owner since buying out the former Ligier team, the only team in France.
