Championship leader Michael Schumacher was fastest in Friday's opening free practice for Sunday's European Formula One Grand Prix.
The Ferrari driver clocked a best time of 1:21.092 after completing eleven laps at the Nurburgring.
Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve was second quickest in his BAR Honda, more than four-tenths of a second adrift of two times world champion Schumacher, with Jordan driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen in third spot.
Overnight rain left the circuit wet early on in the one-hour session before the track dried out in the later stages.
World champion Mika Hakkinen went off on his final lap of the session, when his McLaren locked up at the Dunlop curve.
The Finn was ninth quickest, with British teammate David Coulthard in sixth.
