FIA Announce Changes to the Technical Regulations

Wednesday June 21st, 2000

At the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting today in Warsaw, the following decisions regarding changes to the technical regulations for the 2001 Formula One season were approved. These changes had been unanimously agreed to by the competing teams and were proposed to the Council by the Formula One Technical working group.

The changes are:

  • Front wing to be 50mm higher
  • New roll structure test with higher loads, the lateral component being 400% higher than the 2000 figure
  • In order to help prevent a wheel becoming separated in the event of an accident, two cables (previously one), with separate attachments, must be fitted to connect each wheel to the main structure of the car
  • Larger cockpit opening, further back from the front wheels (to help tall drivers)
  • The seat back is referenced to the headrest and cockpit opening (also to help tall drivers)
  • Larger internal cockpit cross section with 25mm foam padding around the driver's legs
  • Larger minimum external chassis cross sections
  • The driver's removable seat fixings will be standardised in order to allow the seats of all cars to be removed using the same tool.
