Ferrari are the first team to try out the newly FIA-approved Zanvoort track in Holland, when members of the Marlboro World Championship entertained the 100,000 strong record crowd at the Marlboro Masters with demonstrations in their respective machines. Mika Salo and Luca Badoer drove with the F399 a few laps on the track, along with local driver Jan Lammers with his 6.0 litre Le Mans Lola, World Rally champion Tommi Makinen with a Mitsubishi Lancer and Max Biaggi with a World Championship 500cc Yamaha.
Mika Salo hadn't been to Zandvoort since 1988 when he raced in Formula Ford. "I've always enjoyed Holland," he said, "particularly as the Dutch are party animals like the Finns!" The track was wet when Mika took the F399 out for some five laps of the circuit, so no representative times were set. But he enjoyed the track. "It's great. There are some nice corners out at the back and everyone in Formula One would approve of the run-offs out there."
Salo also revealed that since finishing second to Eddie Irvine in last Sunday's German Grand Prix, he had received no less than six offers from Grand Prix teams for next year! He intends to make up his mind "within a week or so."
