FIA president Max Mosley held a press conference on earlier today at the British Grand Prix, whereby he reflected on the criticism widely sounded against the introduction of grooved tyres. "Grooved tyres should stay because they have proved the most effective way of keeping cornering speeds under control," Mosley said, and when asked about the fact that even F1 Supremo, Bernie Ecclestone, supports the return of slicks, he added: "even Bernie isn't right about everything all the time."
Mosley pointed out the French Grand Prix had 68 overtaking moves, "which rather takes the sting out of the accusations of dull racing." following a dull Spanish Grand Prix that Formula One was boring.
None the less, he said that car aerodynamics should be looked at more closely as a means of reducing speeds. "There is much merit in the suggestion that the cars are now too efficient aerodynamically, and we've asked the engineers to look at that," he said.
On a different note, Mosley said he may retire from his job as the FIA president when his tenure ends, at October 2001. "As I feel at the moment, if I last until October 2001 that will be it; I will think very carefully before standing for a third time because it is actually wrong for people to do these jobs for too long," Mosley said.
