McLaren

Mika Hakkinen, todayMika Hakkinen: "I am pleased with today's practice. The car felt good and I was able to work well with the engineers to develop a good set up for the race on Sunday. Of course qualifying will be interesting, it always is, but I think we are looking pretty strong."

David Coulthard: "A good day's practice for me. I worked on setting the car up and apart from a little spin early on there is nothing remarkable to report."

Ron Dennis: "The team had an uneventful day's session with both drivers, as always, concentrating on race setup."

Norbert Haug, Mercedes sporting director: "No problems with the engines and a good job from the team in finding a good base for Sunday's race. I expect it to be an extremely close one."

Williams

Ralf Schumacher: "I am satisfied with my result in today's free practice session; the Winfield WilliamsF1 team has done a very good job. In fact, we have some brand new parts fitted on the car with regards to the aerodynamics that allow more downforce to the car which is also much more stable. I hope that for tomorrow's qualifying we can achieve a better position and then we will look forward to the race."

Eddie Irvine, todayPatrick Head, technical director: "Even if we are still in very early days, Ralf's performance is quite encouraging. In fact he is driving the car in a different specification that we decided to bring forward to this Grand Prix although it was originally planned to be run first at next week's Monza test. Alex's car will be converted to that specification this evening."

Ferrari

Eddie Irvine: "Just like at the French GP, the wind has completely changed direction since last week's test. But this time it has worked in our favour and the car is much better than last week on this track. As the current technical regulations make the cars very wind sensitive, we will have to make sure that the good set-up we have found still works well tomorrow. The only problem I had today was with a broken exhaust."

Michael Schumacher: "We had a very productive test here last week and improved the car. In today's session we continued to work in the same direction and improved still further. We got through all our programme today and only used one set of tyres, unlike some of the cars that were quicker than me. Because of this, I am confident we can have a good weekend."

Jean Todt: "Today's practice went pretty well. Our two drivers worked on different programmes. Today's quickest times are relatively unimportant and they will certainly come down tomorrow. I think that the fight for pole position will be down to tenths of a second."

Stewart

Rubens Barrichello, todayRubens Barrichello: "I'm reasonably happy with my time at the end. We were able to improve the car's handling to suit the track characteristics today. I was able to attack the car a lot more towards the end. On a day like today it's difficult to get a true picture of where we stand because we're not sure exactly what are rivals are running in terms of fuel and tyres."

Johnny Herbert: "It was a pretty frustrating day all round. The engine change in the first session restricted my track time and then I had a problem with the steering wheel, which meant I had to come in and change it. I was not able to get a real feel for the car. I'm hoping for a trouble-free run tomorrow morning so I can be in better shape for qualifying."

Gary Anderson, Technical Director: "We had to start from scratch today because the conditions were nothing like they were in last week's test here. With less grip because of the track temperature it was a battle to find a good balance for the car. We were closer to where we want to be towards the end but it looks like it's going to very tight in qualifying. We will need to think long and hard over tyre choice if the conditions stay as they are."

Martin Whitaker, Director, Ford Racing, Europe: "The team worked to find a consistent set-up and we're very encouraged by Rubens' late run into fifth position, particularly as the times are so close. Johnny had a less productive day because his original engine suffered an internal water leak and it had to be changed for the second session."

Jordan

Damon Hill, todayDamon Hill: "I am fairly happy with things today. We tried some minor changes since the test last week. I am confident we have the right basic set up and that we can do some fine tuning to make further improvements in the lap times. The times are pretty close, but I am happy with the car and feeling confident. Friday practice sessions can be misleading but I feel content and happy to be out there driving. The British Grand Prix has a very special buzz."

Heinz-Harald Frentzen: "We concentrated on set up and had a little work to do as I only tested here for one day last week. So we did not put on new tyres because we were sorting out a few things with the car. I am not too concerned about it and am happy to wait and see how we progress tomorrow. My leg is fine - it is not causing any problems."
