Perhaps the most surprising announcement to come out of the San Marino Grand Prix is expected tonight, when the Arrows Team is due to announce that it is entering an engine partnership deal with Italian car company Lamborghini.
Lamborghini supplied engines between 1989 and 1993 to Lola, Lotus, Ligier, Minardi and Larrouse. In 1991, Lamborghini's president set up a Lamborghini team, named Modena, but better known as 'Lambo'. The car didn't even qualify for 10 of the 16 races it participated in that year, and its best result - 7th place for driver Nicola Larini at the US Grand Prix - was actually achieved on its maiden race. However, the engine's best overall result was 3rd, accomplished by Aguri Suzuki for Lola in the 1990 Japanese GP.
Lamborghini pulled out altogether from Formula One in 1993. Lamborghini is nowadays owned by the German car manufacturer Audi, which overtook the company from Chrysler last summer. This might explain its return to F1 nowadays - Chrysler showed little interest in Formula One, whereas Audi - one of the largest automobile companies in Germany - wants to be involved in the sport, as more and more German car manufacturers are a part of it.
