Autosport (UK) reported today that "British American Racing will use Honda engines" in 2000. They state the information comes from "top-level insiders," and that Honda may encounter "hostility" from Bernie Ecclestone when Honda meets with him later in the week as the FOA have kept the twelfth team spot open for the Japanese manufacturer.
If the story is true, the arrangement will bring about some serious questions. The news is contradictory of Rupert Manwaring's statements last week regarding Honda Racing Development's renewed commitment in tribute to Harvey Postlethwaite. Furthermore, Eddie Irvine is now rumoured to be a candidate for a return to Jordan if Damon Hill decides to retire. Irvine's return would be based on a Honda works involvement. Motoring News (UK) reported that Irvine "is to have opened discussions with Honda representatives who are keen to sign him to lead their own official works team."
Autosport also reported that Benetton may be looking to Ford customer engines for 2000 due to their displeasure with SuperTec performance. Apparently, team boss Rocco Benetton stated the "rumour" was untrue.
