Adrian Newey wants the FIA to rethink their position with regards to the braking system McLaren wanted to use: "I think everybody knows that we were looking at regenerative braking which has now been deemed not legal. That is rather a shame because it was effectively like a boost button. It's a very green technology - you're using stored energy."

He also added that he is not very pleased with the way the teams and the FIA interact about new technical enhancements: "Everyone is always in it for themselves. It's the same at meetings of the Technical Working Group - everyone is looking at it from their own angle. They want to increase their advantage or maintain it." Jean Alesi has also stated this.

Meanwhile the FIA is looking at different things. Max Mosley wants a study into the impact of advertising on people starting smoking. He said: "We have been given some evidence and we are considering the best way to evaluate it. It may be that we decide to hold some sort of formal enquiry headed by an independent person because I don't think it would have enough credibility if the FIA made up its own mind."

Driver news

The new bosses of the Tyrrell team will not sack Ricardo Rosset. Rosset, who has bought himself into the team, failed to qualify for the last two Grands Prix, but Craig Pollock said: "It is looking okay at the moment."

Damon Hill will stay with Jordan. It was speculated that he might go to the CART series because of the bad results with his current team. He stated however: "My hands are full with Jordan at the moment but you always have to keep one eye on the future. However, I have no plans to race in the States - I'm very happy with F1 and that's my first and only choice at the moment. Monaco was the low point of the season. I have to hope we have bottomed out and that we can start heading back up again."

Alexander Wurz has stated that he wants to stay with Benetton in 1999.
