Summary

Mika Hakkinen clinched pole in an exciting qualifying session. Three drivers were competing for the vital first start position: David Coulthard, Giancarlo Fisichella and Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher had to settle for fourth.

• M. Schumacher did not drive at all during the morning sessions because of mechanical problems. He uses the T-car in qualifying.
• Salo uses the spare car because of gearbox problems.
• Barrichello and Irvine wreck their car.
• Rosset again missed the 107% qualifying limit and will not start.
