Both McLarens topped today's testing times on the Magny-Cours track. Coulthard was the faster of the two.

The Prost team, they tested here yesterday, is radically redesigning their car. The car will have a longer wheelbase and new rear suspension. They are also developing a new rear braking system. All should be ready for the Magny-Cours Grand Prix in June.

Eddie Irvine was third. He was running tests for Goodyear. The new tyres should bring Michael Schumacher to the same level as McLaren. Ferrari will also introduce a new front wing in Montreal.

Williams is still forced to wait for the improvements to the car. Frentzen stated: "There is not much new for Monaco."

Ralf Schumacher has stated that he wants to stay with Jordan in 1999. However, it is now speculated that Takagi, who drove impressively during the last Grand Prix, could replace him. This all could be made possible by the Mugen-Honda. It is still unclear if Honda will enter Formula One in 2000.

Benetton will continue to use Mecachrome engines in 1999. Benetton boss Dave Richards stated: "I wanted to see commitment of development and be reassured that Renault was going to move forward. I've been given those reassurances and on that basis I'm very happy that we are continuing with Mecachrome. We have always been told that, by the end of this year, Renault would have a better view of its overall objectives in the sport. If it says it will come back in a reasonable time frame, we will stick with Mecachrome."

Jan Magnussen's seat doesn't seem to be in danger anymore. It was rumoured that Jos Verstappen would replace him, but because of his good performance in Spain, this has become very unlikely. Jackie Stewart said: "Jan did very well."
