China to host GP; Villeneuve fastest in '98 testing

According to Benrie Ecclestone it's now certain that China will host a Formula One Grand prix next season. He told the South China Morning Post: "Whatever happens with Belgium and France, Formula One will race in Zhuhai next year. I am sure."

China has already stated that they are ready for a Grand Prix on the ultra modern new Zhuhai track.

Ecclestone also added: "The FIA has been trying to move some of races to Asia and this is something the FIA and myself want to see happen. It will happen if everything is ready."


Villeneuve fastest in '98 testing

Jacques Villeneuve topped today's times on the Barcelona circuit with a time of 1m 25.07s. Both the McLaren were faster but Mika Hakkinen, with a 1m 22.95s, drove the '97 McLaren and David Coulthard, with a 1m 24.95s, who tested new 1998 components on the '97 car. The new McLaren will be released next Thursday.

Damon Hill was a bit slow today in his preparations for a totally new season with Jordan-Mugen. He was over 1.5 seconds slower than Tyrrell driver Takagi.

Stewart was testing their Ford new engine on the Santa Pod drag racing track. Olivier Panis clocked a best time of 1m 20.67s on the Magny-Cours circuit.

Michael Schumacher tested several types of wet 1998 Goodyear tyres on the Mugello track. The new 047 Ferrari engine broke the 400-kilometre barrier without having any problems.
