Hill takes pole at the Nurburgring

Summary

Hill takes his third pole of the season at the Nurburgring. He was driving in league of his own today. Villeneuve was second in the other Williams-Renault. Michael Schumacher was third in his home country.

Notes:

Eddie Irvine used a new Ferrari V10 after his engine problems yesterday.

Hakkinen blew his Mercedes engine at the beginning of the session, but he could continue in the spare car.

Katayama parked his Tyrrell on the grass.

Spins were there by: Diniz, Alesi.

Berger used a new set of wings on his Benetton-Renault.

Both the Forti's could not qualify within the 107% rule. Forti decided not to use the 1996 car for this Grand Prix.

Quotes

Hill: "I've never won in Germany so it would be nice to win here... right now I'm just happy to get pole. It was a very nice lap. The German was then well of the pace good and the time showed it, so I was really satisfied."

Schumacher:"With the current time I don't have any chance against Damon Hill and I can't win."
