The CART score system must be one of the most twisted methods in autoracing. And yet, it awards many more drivers than Formula One does and is particularly more rewarding for the teams at the back end of the grid, who can score points for the mere fact that they finish within the top 12 of the race. Implementing this points system on the 1999 F1 World Championship season shows a rather different drivers' table, at the top and at the bottom... Here's how F1 would have scored in CART.
The exact system of scoring in CART is:
1st = 20 points; 7th = 6;
2nd = 16; 8th = 5;
3rd = 14; 9th = 4;
4th = 12; 10th = 3;
5th = 10; 11th = 2;
6th = 8; 12th = 1.
In addition, the Pole sitter gets a point and the driver with most laps lead in the race also gets a point. |
