1999 SuperStats

Post-Barcelona GP Edition. Compilation by Rory Gordon, Australia

The Superstats is an on-going project that attempts to classify various performances throughout an F1 season by, generally, averaging each race's performance, in several categories, over the entire season.

Conceived as the SuperGrid by the late John Taylor for Autocourse, I started my own compilations when Taylor died. Originally, the SuperStats - as the project was to become - was developed purely for my own interest. This has not changed, and the day I get bored with the SuperStats, they will stop.

All figures used in the SuperStats are based on the official FIA timing sheets and, where necessary, those sheets are deemed to be the final authority.

The SuperStats always tries to present some new, or some different, figures each season. This season, the SuperStats are going jingoistic and presenting figures based on national performance.

The tables that follow show figures based, as usual, on the drivers' performance over the season. What these tables show that is different, is that the information is compiled on the basis of each driver's nationality (unless otherwise stated, all figures are averages).

The tables include all drivers who have participated in a session at a Grand Prix so far this season.

Each driver's nationality is as defined on the timesheets (ie. Eddie Irvine is deemed to be British). For the record, the British and the Italians are most populous in the SuperStats, with four drivers each. They are followed by the Brazilians, the French and the Germans with three each. There are two each from Finland and Spain, and sole representatives from Austria, Canada and Japan.

What do these figures show? Like all statistics, they can show what you want them to show. Apart from that, I feel that these are still in the experimental stage - part of the reason for their presentation this early in the season is to see if there is any interest in such figures.
