1998 SuperStats

Belgian GP Edition. Compilation by Rory Gordon, Australia

This edition of the SuperStats, for the GP of Belgium, presents a variety of data for the grids, the races, the teams and the venues so far this season.

SUPERGRID

So far this season, the McLaren drivers (Hakkinen and Coulthard) and M. Schumacher seem to have dominated the grids both in terms of times and positions - which should come as no real surprise. The top twelve drivers come from six teams (McLaren, Ferrari, Benetton, Williams, Jordan and Sauber).

The sum of all the pole times so far is 18m32.491s (an average of 1m25.576s), which means that the sum 107% time is 19m50.365s (an average of 1m31.567s).

Those three drivers who have not set a time in all qualifying sessions are marked with an aster ("*") and are shown separately.

The figures given in this table show the average of each driver's official grid positions (on which the table is sorted), his total time, and the average of the percentages by which he was "off" the pole position.

SUPERRACE

As with the SuperGrid, the SuperRace is dominated by the McLaren drivers and MSchumacher, although Villeneuve has completed more laps and more kilometres (not necessarily the same thing) than any other driver.

So far, a total of 13,270 racing laps have been completed, covering 61,471.214 kilometres, at a total time of 337h31m50.830s. A little esoteric, perhaps, but there you go.

Drivers who did not officially start in every race are marked with an aster ("*"), but are included in the main body of the table.

The figures given in this table show the average of each driver's official finishing position (on which the table is sorted), the total number of racing laps he has completed, the total kilometres he has covered, and his total racing time.

TEAMS

In looking at these team figures, please bear in mind that some of them are based on the average of the team's drivers' averages and so may well be open to a variety of interpretations.

Despite that, the figures do seem to concur with the trend in the tables above - that McLaren and Ferrari are dominating the season.

RACES

I leave you to draw your own conclusions from these figures. The sets of "average" figures are based on the times set by the drivers in each race. Remember that in some races, the GP of Belgium for example, some drivers did not start (and so are not included at all) and other drivers did not complete a single lap (and so recorded a "zero" time - quite a different thing).
