Atlas F1

Formula One Senior's Tourney

by Eric Gustafson, USA

They did it in golf, why not in Formula One? Instead of having to watch the current pathetic display of indecision on the part of former driving greats as they dance in and out of retirement, why not set up a separate series where they can race amongst themselves. As an avid golfer, the concept is tailor made for the Lion King himself, Nigel Mansell. This way he and Prost can finally work out their differences, not to mention Prost and Lauda.

To make the transition smoother, and to avoid such embarrassing eventualities as not being able to stuff slightly plumped former champs into increasingly cramped F1 cockpits, the series can use, as I'm sure you guessed by now, golf carts. Hell, they can even race on the golf paths. Better yet, we could combine the two senior circuits and have former F1 jocks racing along the paths while Arnold and the boys whack their balls.

The marketing potential for this idea is downright explosive. Not only does it combine two popular sports, it is perfect for today's politically correct times. What better way for GM to market its new battery on wheels than to sponsor electric golf cart racing. And if Tony George manages to triumph in his circular crusade, the CART guys would have a place to unload their surplus T-shirts, if not take over the fledgling series entirely.

I think the only potential problem is a media-related one. It would be hard for an announcer to go from his or her hushed set up for Trevino's critical putt to Prost's tire-scorching pass at the end of the ninth hole fairway. Of course some other problems could crop up. The senior golfer could become envious of all the fun the F1 boys, err gentlemen, would be having and want to jump ship.

But then the more one ponders, the brighter this series' potential becomes. Why have so many great road courses like Riverside been forced to close? Land is simply too valuable to leave idle between races. Golf courses are proven money makers. What about Europe, F1's true homeland, you might ask? Not only are there plenty of golf courses, but golf is taking off in such traditionally golf-unfriendly places as Germany. What better way to further promote this expansion.

The Formula One Senior's Circuit is an idea whose time has come.
