1997 SuperGrid and SuperRace
|

1997 Final Edition. Compilation by Rory Gordon, Australia
|
With the end of the 1997 season, Atlas brings you the final SuperGrid
and SuperRace tables for the year.
As in past years, while the figures presented during the season vary
from issue to issue, the season-end figures are a veritable glut,
hopefully a feast of figures for the F1 anorak.
With the exception of the first SuperGrid table, all sorting is done
purely by name.

The 1997 SuperGrid is made up of the grid times of all drivers who
qualified at all races during the season.
Since Hakkinen and Villeneuve were disqualified from a race each,
their grid times for those races have not been included and drivers
behind them on the grid have been moved up one spot. It is felt that
this is the most satisfactory method of dealing with disqualifications
- please note that this is a change from previous years, and may be
subject to change in future years.
The 1997 Supergrid lap was 83.388 kilometres, the sum of one lap at
each of the 1997 circuits. The total of the pole times was 23 minutes
35.227 seconds, and the total 107% time was 25 minutes 14.293 seconds
(the average pole time was 1 minute 23.249 seconds, and so the average
107% time was 1 minute 29.076 seconds). This means that the speed
around the 1997 SuperGrid circuit for the notional pole-winner was
212.119 kilometres per hour.
Any driver who did not qualify for all races is marked with an aster
("*"). Note that Trulli is mentioned 3 times: once for each of Minardi
and Prost; and once ("TOT") for his overall performance. The "% off
pole" figures are the average of the percentage off the pole position
time that the driver was.
This table shows the eligible drivers for the 1997 SuperGrid sorted in
order of their times based on the average of their grid times over the
full season, along with the time split to the previous driver, the
gap to the driver on pole, and with Frentzen's pole time of 1 minute
23.745 seconds as 100%, their percentage of that time.

The 1997 SuperRace totalled 1,054 laps of a 4.905 kilometre circuit
(the average of a single lap at all the circuits), and any driver
completed the full race distance at every race would have driven
5,045.777 kilometres (Alesi was the closest) - race distance does not
match the apparent laps and kilometres due to averaging and because
not all races are over complete laps.
A driver who was disqualified from a race has had no data entered for
that race.
In all, the drivers completed 17,155 racing laps and travelled
82,127.018 kilometres. Total racing time for all drivers was 435 hours
32 minutes 8.835 seconds. On average, each driver racing raced at each
race for 1 hour 12 minutes 13.028 seconds.
This table shows each driver's average finishing position and the
number of total laps he completed. In addition, the "Avg. %'age"
figures show the average percentage of each race that each driver
completed and the notional distance he covered (both based on total
laps completed). Finally, there is the average of each driver's best
race lap.

Teams
Team information has been presented in the past with a note of
scepticism and this note applies also this year. This is because the
team information is compiled generally on the average of the team's
drivers' average peformances - the exceptions to this are the "Total
Laps" figures which show the total number of laps completed by the
team's drivers, and "Laps Led" which shows the total number of laps
led by the team's drivers).
In other words, the information in the team tables means as much or as
little as the reader wants it to mean.

Races
New to the Super figures for 1997 is some information on each of the
races during the season. These figures have only recently been
developed and should be regarded as being experimental.
Broadly speaking, the information in these tables is based on the
average of the participating drivers' performances for that race. The
exceptions to this are the two sets of figures based on totals which,
strange as it may seem, are based on the totals of the participating
drivers' performances for that race.
