SuperGrid & SuperRace 1997

SUPERGRID 1997

In the last update of the 1997 SuperGrid, mention was made of the possibility of Villeneuve breaking the record for consecutive poles. "Murray Walker" disease set in, and Frentzen got pole for Monaco. However, that hasn't really affected the top of the Supergrid, except that the gap between Villeneuve and some of the rest has decreased. The biggest move has been for Irvine who has dropped back a couple of places.

The SuperGrid following Monaco has some new, trial, figures. The "Split" shows the time difference between each driver and the driver immediately preceding him. The "Gap" column shows the time difference between each driver and the driver on pole position. The "%" column is each driver's percentage of "pole". Each column should, it is hoped, allow quicker analysis. With the inclusion of these new figures it was decided not to include the total time figures, since this would have made the table very wide.

The "107%" figure in the SuperGrid is based on the time for the driver currently on pole position for the 1997 SuperGrid, and NOT on the notional, ie. actual, pole times (the average for this is currently 1m22.273 and 107% is therefore 1m28.023).

With both Williams/Renault/Goodyear drivers at the top of the SuperGrid, it should come as no surprise that the best qualifying combination is exactly that, with averages of 1m22.691, 1m23.539 and 1m24.161 respectively.

Due to circuit changes, times for Monaco are not comparable with previous years.

As of this update, Sospiri and Rosset will not be shown in the 1997 SuperGrid/Race, unless either of them participates in another race.

This SuperGrid is sorted by time.

SUPERRACE 1997

Something that gets a mention every year in the SuperRace is the fact that covering a lot of laps in a race doesn't necessarily mean getting a lot of points: this update of the SuperRace has been sorted on completed laps, and clearly shows this.

While total distance covered and total race time seem to fall into rough line with laps covered, average position is well out of line.

Those readers with an inclination towards fiddling with the SuperGrid/Race figures might like to look at combining the distance with the time to get an average speed - it's interesting, but space does not permit it to be shown in this update.

An aster ("*") denotes that a driver has not participated in every race.
