Atlas F1

Readers' Comments

Updated: 04 August 1997 German (Mitch McCann) Issue

Mitchell McCann is british journalist at its worst. Jingoistic and prejudiced. Stupid and ignorant. Dull and irrelevant. When I read his column, I get a fuzzy picture of Rush Limbaugh drinking tea.

To Gervas and all Mitch readers:

Atlas F1 enjoys Mitch's column. That's why we asked him to join. We understand that a lot of you don't care for his humor. However, there are a some individuals who sincerely like his wit -- most importantly, us.

We appreciate all comments regarding his past columns. For those of you who can't stand the Formula One Insider, I suggest that you don't read it. For those who sincerely like the Insider, we will encourage Mitch to continue his editorials in each issue of Atlas F1.

Paul Kaizar

PS. Saying that someone reminds you of Rush Limbaugh is probably the best compliment one could ever make.

I don't want to start a flame war, but I find Mitch McCann's article, "The Formula One Insider" to be quite funny. Humor is a subjective thing, and those who take an individual more seriously then racing as a whole are bound to be offended by Mitch's writing. I find the almost threatening tone of the replies to be amusing given that they claim Mitch is being too aggressive in his article and on rasf1. I don't find the Stunned Mullet to be all that funny and Jos surely does spin a lot.

It`s nice to see the F1 Insider on Atlas. Mitch's column is always hilarious.

F1 needs a little humor, and Mitch provides. Keep it up.

I write in support of Mitch McCann and Atlas F1 in the decision to include Mr. McCann in the "line-up". His irreverence is welcome insight into what has become a mega-dollar advertising business masquerading as the pinnacle of motorsport.

I was there in the days of Jim Clark, Damon's father, Rindt, Amon, et al, and support F1 even in its current guise. But to even pretend to such solemnity, current F1 has some major changing to do (well documented all around).

So, lighten up and enjoy a poke at the scoundrels that would have you believe they are doing YOU a favor.

Once again I had to burst out laughing after reading Mitch's latest take on the oh so serious F1 world. I'm begining to wonder if the ever smiling Frank Williams is the one behind all this flaming? I'm sorry but the man is funny, really really funny and I wanna know, really wanna know, do you people really take all this so serious? Oh I get it, this was an assigment for the graduating class of 1997, Williams University of Humor. I for one laughed almost as hard at your responses, perhaps a summer session at McCann Humor Inc will be of some help. Mitch, find it in your heart to help this class.

I call out to all you team owner, driver, pit crew, wanna be "fans" try and smile. The happiest days of our lives are spent wearing a smile, I for one do not own a Williams Formula T-shirt.

To Mr Insider:

I Love Your Work, to quote a recent movie. (Con Air the bit referring to the psychopath)

To the rest of you that don't like Mr McCann U.S.A. Esquire or his writing: lighten up. Some parts of the world don't take them selves so seriously. We Australians haven't extradited Rory Gordon (yet) even thought some times his Ramblings ramble so far off the subject that you are tempted to wonder if he is commenting on the local Lawn bowls tournament, or fly fishing in Antarctica. (Sorry Rory)

The Answer to the Quiz is Never. The Ford V8 blew up before he left Manchester.

Hey Mitchell Did you write Clerks or Mallrats ???

Keep up the good work.

Is it just me or has Williams lost the plot. They lost Newey, Lost ELF, lost their Breaks, loosing Renault, Lost strategy, Loosing their hair... What will fall off next.

Do I have an evil mind or does it strike everybody as strange when Renault design a "new" engine the year before they leave F1. Is this to give MeccaCrome a head start or to safely pack away some secrets hiding in last years engine?

As commentators refer less and less to Renault as the most powerful engine in F1, are there unseen forces at work. Maybe Villeneuve should get a nose job -- bleaching his hair didn't work.

Everybody is entitled to there opinion -- even Mr McCann Esquire. This has been mine.

Dear Atlas.

About "The Formula 1 Insider". How many mistakes! Some people think Mitchell McCann is a American, but he isn't. Others think he has something personal against Jos Verstapen, but he doesn't. And, finally, Mr. McCann himself thinks he is very funny, but he's not.

He is being only infantile.

PS. Fortunately we haven't only silly writing on Atlas. There are some magnificent articles on it too. Like, for instance, "The Accessibility in F1" by Andy Wilson. Congratulations.

Sirs,

This is probably not the first or last time you have or will hear this. But, here goes anyway. Mr. McCann does not do your otherwise excellent site justice. In fact, he degrades it. His comments are silly, childish and obviously done just to draw controversy. We don't need "shock" journalism here. At the same time his "news" bits and announcements are OLD.

I am sure his exclusion from your editorial contributors would be appreciated by most. Otherwise, thanks for the excellent news and articles included in your site.

Hey there,

About all these letter criticizing Mitch McCann's style of writing, all I can say is, "tchah!"..and a "bah!" for good measure. If he pokes fun at Villeneuve or Jos, let's face it, they both deserve all they're getting (based on current form, at least) -- especially Mr. "One Man Wrecking Crew" Jos. Dutch and Canadian readers take way too much offence from this F1 column from the lighter side. Of course, none of them would be offended if HHF or Michael Schumacher was the target (that would be a cue for sackfuls of letters from outraged Germans).

RE: Mr. McCann and the angry Dutch

OK, OK, I admit I couldn't resist sending my opinion about the little revolt against Mr. McCann's column. First of all, congratulations to him. So many responses are indicative that the colum cannot possibly be as boring as someone said. Boring stuff makes people sleep, it doesn't make them react as if something bit them.

Also, to all the Dutch friends that want this column suppressed: ever heard of freedom of speech? difficult concept to understand over there? (now, guys, don't start with the "American with all the money" accusations, I have been in the US only for the past 5 years, I am 1/2 Italian and 1/2 German, my only passport is European). I personally believe Mr. McCann should be free to make fun of Jos Verstappen or any other driver as much as it pleases him. You don't like his column??? One advice: don't read it. Simple as that. Who is forcing you, other than your masochist need to get mad at what he writes???

And one last thing. Is it really Mr. McCann's fault if Jos is a nice guy but just a mediocre driver that spins his cars just a little too often? I mean, I understand the Dutch desperatly wanting to have their own F1 hero like Senna, Prost, Lauda, Schumacher, Villeneuve (Gilles, obviously), but unfortunately there is one or two of these guys every 10 years. Jos had a Benetton a few years ago. While Schumacher then and Wurtz recently have shown their potential right away, Jos's only memorable moment was the fire in the pits. So, stop complaining about the jokes about him and hope a more talented Dutchman is currently racing in F3 and will one day become a great F1 driver. Jos is not the answer to your dreams.

Atlas,

I too, like Jaap and Peter, am a serious F1 fan and applaud your fast and accurate reporting of F1 news, but I also have a sense of humour. I've been reading Mitch's "F1 Insider" on rec.autos.sport.f1 for about a year, and I greatly look forward to them. They always bring a smile to my face, give me a hearty laugh, and brighten up an otherwise dreary work-a-day existence. Please keep including these gems.

Sincerely,

David Bishop

I just love the F1 Insider column by Mitchell McCann. Shame that some F1 fans are so uptight that making fun of F1 seems to affect them like a personal insult. Doesn't it seem to you that Jos is crashing all the time? Remember him driving for Benetton?

Regarding Mr. McCann,

Relax everyone. If we can not laugh at ourselves, we are taking life way to seriously. Sometimes (most times) Formula One is taken way to serious. Mr McCann articles add some fun to the sport. Keep up the good work Mitchell.

Greetings from Canada!

A very good friend of mine went rollerblading this morning on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit (It is open to rollerbladers and cyclists when the Grand Prix is not running). My friend is a very avid Formula 1 fan and he recognized Mr. Ecclestone together with Mr. Norman Legault (president of the Canadian Grand Prix). They were driving on the track in two (2) late model Jeep Cherokees and showing the sites to three (3) unidentified Asian men. Does this mean the end of the Canadian Grand Prix?

Re: The Formula One Insider

Is there a point to this column? Is it supposed to be funny?

It is, at best, a sophmoric collection of puerile, moronic, chatterings.

I expected better - much better - from Atlas F1.

Cordially,

Peter Agnes

Dear Atlas,

It's not often that I react or give comments on a website, but I was triggered by all those messages flying around "The Net" about Mitchell McCann. I'm a F1 fan (as is almost everybody visiting your site), and so I've read the article written by Mitchell, as well as all other articles.

Now, I'm not going to react to his article in particular, or to anything he wrote about Verstappen (even though I'm Dutch), but what really triggered me is the fact that Mitchell seems to be a "famous" person on rec.autos.sport.f1. He has a somewhat aggressive style of writing, which could almost be described as spamming. It certainly isn't showing any form of professionalism or what-so-ever, and lacks foundation and substantial ground.

I always visit Team Atlas for the hottest news and the good inside stories. Those stories may be written with a sharp pen (even preferably!), but I think that accepting an article written by Mitchell McCann (following his "career" on rasf1) isn't contributing to the quality of your site.

Please, continue your site, with the sharp written stories, but please asure us that those stories were written by fully grown up persons, who are able to put information in the artcles, and not their own personal grieves as developed by fooling around on rasf1.

Hello Mr. McCann

I was just wondering what year(s) you won the F1 championship? I only ask because after reading your latest report at the Atlas site, I found myself wondering who this know-it-all writer(hack) was...

If Americans are supposed to have all the bucks, why don't they go out and buy some real wit?

PS. for an insight on humour, go to the Stunned Mullet site...and take notes...
