Gambling and Formula One: Don't Bet On It!
by Robert Balling

The gambling boom is on in America. Las Vegas is the fastest growing city, Indians are building casinos across their sacred lands, river boats are clogging the waterways with plenty of gaming attractions, and off-track betting is taking over our pubs. The gaming industry is claiming to be the fastest growing sector in the American economy, and there is absolutely no end in sight.

Americans simply love to gamble, and the gaming industry is providing us with more and more options, including a strong emphasis on sports. Basketball, football, baseball (even of the replacement variety), hockey, horse racing, dog racing, and boxing comprise most of the action. Where is auto racing in this boom, and in particular, where does Formula One belong in the action?

At the present, wagering on Formula One is tougher than landing a race in America. Several years ago, a Scotish friend of mine went with me to Las Vegas for a weekend. We attempted to find a place that would book a Formula One bet, and after hours of questioning various sports books, we were told that the Stardust could accomodate our need. We arrived at the Stardust to discover that the only auto racing action was on NASCAR; the book knew nothing of this " Formula One" game. Once again, Formula One was out in the cold.

I really believe that this Journal should become the outlet for gaming information regarding Formula One. I am told that Europeans and/or Australians have access to information regarding the many proposition bets that could be associated with F1 (I have never seen this in either place). So if someone is in a position to supply this information to the Journal, they will find their place in Formula One.

F1 is the greatest sport in the world...you can bet on it?
