The CART score system must be one of the most complicated methods in autoracing. And yet, it awards many more drivers than Formula One does and is particularly more rewarding to the teams at the back end of the grid, allowing them to score points for the mere fact that they finish within the top 12 of the race. Implementing this points system on the 2000 F1 World Championship season doesn't shows a different end result, but it does highlight some interesting changes in the lower field... Here's how F1 would have scored in CART:
|
The exact system of scoring in CART is:
1st = 20 points; 7th = 6;
2nd = 16; 8th = 5;
3rd = 14; 9th = 4;
4th = 12; 10th = 3;
5th = 10; 11th = 2;
6th = 8; 12th = 1.
In addition, the Pole sitter gets a point and the driver with most laps led in the race also gets a point. |

* The difference in positions between the current ranking of the driver/team in the Formula One World Championship and that of the CART-based ranking. "New" indicates the driver/team are not ranked in the Formula One World Championship.
|
Notable Changes:
After the German Grand Prix, Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello had the same number of points as teammate and ultimate Champion, Michael Schumacher.
The Sauber team scored points in all races this year, except for Brazil - where the team did not participate, after they withdrew both drivers prior to the race.
The Arrows team are the big losers in CART points - Jos Verstappen dropped four places in the Championship standings, and both Pedro de la Rosa and the team itself dropped two spots.
Villeneuve and BAR both jumped one spot in their respective standings.
